Reasons to Consider Converting to a Concierge Medicine Practice

While the doctors we work with have a wide variety of reasons for transitioning from a traditional practice, we spoke to SignatureMD affiliated physician, Dr. Joel Meshulam, about why he started to consider converting to concierge medicine practice.

As Joel shared, switching to a concierge model relieved numerous pressures that had built to a breaking point. In his words:

I’d been thinking about making the change for some time, but couldn’t really find a model that made me comfortable. The pressures that I was experiencing were pretty substantial in terms of the shrinking profit margin, having to pay staff, and that hamster wheel of medicine – churn them in, churn them out.

I actually reached a point where I was either going to walk and try to find another profession, or change substantially how I did what I did, and it was a very pivotal moment for me.

I remember it very clearly.

I’m glad that I didn’t walk.

Medical journals are littered with stories of doctors who’ve just had it between the pressures of seeing patients, the fear of litigation, the stress of paying bills, the government, the Affordable Care Act, meaningful use – it just goes on and on, and I’m just one guy in an office. I did a pretty good job of staying on top of that wave, but I was feeling like I was getting buried.

I knew that I had to make some kind of a change to retain my sanity and keep practicing medicine because that’s what I was trained to do, and I do love it, but I just couldn’t keep doing it the way that I was doing it. I’d been doing it that way for twenty-four years and change is tough, but I knew I had to do something or I wasn’t going to be able to keep my mind straight.
