Jeffrey Unger, MD
Family Medicine
Jeff Unger and his wife, Lisa, have been residents of the Inland Empire for over 25 years. Jeff is a 3rd generation physician whose interest in medicine began at the impressionable age of 5 in Chicago while following his grandfather and father on house calls. With so many family members trained in the field of medicine and nursing, Jeff was stunned to learn that his brother wanted to become a Rabbi! Perhaps this is how Jeff learned to integrate physical medicine with spirituality!
As a board certified family physician, Jeff’s interest in diabetes began in 1986 when he was personally diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Remarkably, Jeff was unable to find a local physician with enough experience in managing Type 1 Diabetes to place him on insulin. Having learned close to nothing about diabetes during his 3 year family medicine residency at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, CA, Jeff had no choice but to learn diabetes self-management by trial and error. The dreadful sight of needles was quickly replaced by successful strategies Jeff used to help others attain their glucose targets. Soon after, Jeff began to teach his newly developed skills to other primary care physicians both locally and at national meetings. He then partnered with pharmaceutical companies requesting to become an Advisor for new drugs such as inhaled insulin, GLP-1 analogues, rapid acting insulin analogues, SGLT-2 inhibitors, and DPP-4 inhibitors.
