Diabetes Connected to Cancer Deaths

We are all well aware of the dangers of diabetes and the harm and inconvenience it can cause. But new data shows it can actually affect one’s chances for surviving cancer.

In a newly released study conducted by researchers from the National Cancer Institute, it was found that “having diabetes was associated with an 11 percent increased risk of dying from cancer among women and a 17 percent increased risk of cancer death among men,” according to the New York Times story.

As the story outlines, “the researches collected diet, lifestyle and health data from 500,000 people ages 50 to 71 and followed the patients for 11 years. They found that having diabetes not only increased risk for dying from cancer, but people with diabetes were, over all, more likely to be given a cancer diagnosis as well.”

While the study did not separate those suffering from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, the scary results of this study just further reinforce the perils of diabetes. SignatureMD is hoping to help slow the diabetes epidemic through education, awareness and its network of Endocrinologists.
