Dr. Mark Odell Sanders is a Houston native who has devoted more than four decades to the practice of family medicine. He was born and raised in Houston, earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Houston, attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and completed his Family Practice residency at Southwest Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Sanders began his medical career in 1982 as part of a multi-physician family practice group. In 2009, he founded Sugar Land Family Health Care, establishing a practice built on long-term relationships, continuity, and trust. In a unique and deeply meaningful chapter of his career, he was joined by his daughter, Heidi Sanders, PA-C, and together they have had the privilege of caring for individuals and families throughout the Fort Bend community for the past 17 years.
The foundation for Dr. Sanders’ philosophy of care was planted early in life. As a child, he spent summers accompanying his mother to a nursing home where she served as Director of Volunteers. Watching her bring compassion, dignity, and joy into the lives of residents made a lasting impression. During his college years, Dr. Sanders worked four summers in nursing homes, forming relationships with residents and learning firsthand the power of presence, kindness, and attentive care. It was there that his calling to
medicine took root.
Over 46 years in practice, Dr. Sanders’ passion for caring has continued to grow and mature, shaped by the thousands of patients who have entrusted him with their care and shared their stories along the way. He believes deeply in medicine that listens, walks alongside patients through every season of life, and treats each person as more than a diagnosis.
One of the greatest joys of Dr. Sanders’ career has been working alongside his daughter and witnessing the same compassion and dedication come alive in her. Together, they have been blessed to serve many families and friends as trusted primary care providers. As he looks to the future, Dr. Sanders remains energized by his work and grateful for the opportunity to continue practicing medicine with purpose. This next season includes a thoughtful transition to a care model that allows deeper relationships with patients while also creating space to mentor a younger physician to partner with Heidi and carry the practice forward. Dr. Sanders sees this as an opportunity to plant new seeds—ensuring that Sugar Land Family Health Care continues its tradition of compassionate care for generations to come.
