Healthcare in the US: 16.3% of GDP and Climbing
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and The Office of the Actuary estimate that in 2007 $2.25 trillion was spent on healthcare in the United States, representing 16.3% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product. By 2017, these figures will jump to $4.3 trillion and 19.5%, respectively. This means that approximately $1 out of every $5 will be spent on healthcare.
SignatureMD, with its personalized or concierge health program, is trying to help the nation reverse this terrifying trend by developing individualized healthcare programs that emphasize wellness and prevention. The lion’s share of the $2.25+ trillion dollars spent each year on healthcare is for management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac disease. Personalized healthcare programs are designed to optimize patient health and help prevent or delay the onset of such debilitating diseases resulting in a prescription for better health and long term healthcare costs.
