Clifford W. Fetters, MD

- Fort Wayne Medical Education
Clifford Fetters, MD received his Bachelor of Science in Life Science from Indiana State University in 1981. He then completed a three-year residency in family medicine at Fort Wayne Medical Education.
Dr. Fetters went on to practice family medicine in the group practice ‘Family Physicians of Carmel’ in Carmel, Indiana for 17 years. 20 years ago, he was a pioneer in women’s healthcare issues. He was one of the first physicians to use bioidentical hormone replacement therapy directed by serum blood levels to manage perimenopause and menopause. Over 14 years ago, Dr. Fetters instituted a diabetes and heart disease prevention program. He was one of the first physicians in Indiana to start instituting a 2-hour postprandial insulin and blood sugar level to diagnose insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and diabetes.
His aggressive approach to treating these conditions led him to be referred to by the community as “a doctor who cures diabetes.” He became disillusioned by traditional medicine’s approach to disease, a system that treats the signs and symptoms of a condition but does not look for the root cause nor seek a cure. His quest for a better way to treat his patients led him to discover functional medicine. Functional medicine is a science-based personalized healthcare approach that assesses and treats the underlying causes of illness through individually tailored therapies which aim to restore health and improve function.
Dr. Fetters is currently participating in a two-year fellowship and will be in the first class of doctors to receive a Functional Medicine degree. In January 2006, Dr. Fetters left his group practice to start Health and Wellness of Carmel, an integrated practice of healthcare providers dedicated to offering the best traditional and functional medicine to their clients.
Dr. Fetters’ special interest is in health preservation and disease prevention. His clients are encouraged to take an active role in their health. Proper nutrition, exercise, and natural supplements will be offered as an alternative to prescription drugs. He also specializes in the treatment of chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. He has expertise in treating diabetes, heart disease, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, obesity and hormone dysfunction. He also enjoys using nutrients in the treatment of depression, anxiety, bipolar and attention-deficit disorder.
